The British government decided to make the American colonies pay a large share of the war debt from the French and Indian War. Through the Sugar Act, Stamp Act, and other taxes, the British tried to collect taxes that the American people considered harsh. The Sugar Act taxed all sorts of goods such as mollasses, syrup and such. This caused a lot of public outcry and protest. After this another tax was placed called The Stamp Act which taxed newspapers, playing cards and such. This also caused a lot of public outcry and protest. The Navigation Act of 1673 placed a penny tax to every pound of tobacco created from Plantations. This obviously created even more outrage, lastly the Tea Act enabled the British East India Tea Party to sell its low costing tea directly to the colonists which undermined the colonists tea and also lead to the Boston Tea Party. Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty boarded 3 vessels and threw 342 chests of tea overboard which pushed both sides on to the brink of war.
The Sugar Act-- A tax imposed by the British to tax syrup, mollasses and other goods. This caused public outcry and protest. The tax that this act created was never efficiently collected due to the resistance of the colonists and evasion to avoid paying said tax. Eventually Parliament lowered the tax from 6 pence to 3 pence and Grenville made sure that the colonists payed these taxes. Market reduced in the colonies due to these new imposed taxes.
The Stamp Act-- The Stamp Act was passed by the British Parliament in 1765 on March 22nd. It was a tax created to tax newspapers, playing cards and basically every piece of printed paper you used. This also caused public outcry and protest. Surprisingly this outcry was not because of the price the colonists had to pay, it was purely because Britain created this tax without the colonists permission and seemed to set a standard that Britain used the colonies to create profit.
The Tea Act-- Law passed by the British Parliament allowing the British East India Company to sell its low-cost tea directly to the colonies, undermining colonial tea merchants. This also caused more backlash. Eventually this would cause the Boston Tea Party to rise and bring both Britain and the colonists on the brink of war by dumping 342 chests full of British tea overboard.
Effects of the American Revolution
The Declaration of Independence-- This document explained why the colonies wanted to part from British rule. It depicted the grievances that the colonists felt towards the British and Goerge the 3rd. Overall this document states all the reasoning behind why America wanted to declare its independence from Britain, due to its harsh taxes and unfair treatment towards the colonists.
The Treaty of Paris-- This document outlined the terms of the British surrender, and officially allowed the colonies to become independent from Britain. The representatives of the United States were Benjamin Franklin, John Jay and John Adams, many more represented the United States but these were the more notable people who have done so. The terms gave the United States all land east of the Mississipi River and gave the United States fishing rights off of the Canadian coasts. The Prime Minister of London, Lord Shelburne agreed to this, his reasoning being that the United States would prove a very nice economical partner as it was rapidly growing.
The Articles of the Confederation-- This was America's first attempt at governing its people. This gave the new "states" too much power and proved insufficient as means of governing a nation.
